JKA stands for Japan Karate Association. It is one of the most influential Shotokan karate organisations in the world. It is also one of the oldest karate organisations continuously in operation until the present. The Japan Karate Association aims to promote improvement of its skills and self-discipline by research and instruction of Karatedo, thereby contributing to the improvement of the well-being of the people and cultivate a sound martial arts spirit. Moreover, it aims to contribute to world peace by spreading the spirit of Japanese martial arts.
Karate is not a game of points, weight classes or showy demonstrations. It is a martial art and way of life that trains a practitioner to be peaceful; but if conflict is unavoidable, true karate dictates taking down an opponent with a single blow. True karate is based on Bushido- the body, mind and spirit—the whole person—must be developed simultaneously. Through kihon, kumite and kata we learn to control our movements. Karate tends to have less emphasis on groundwork and more emphasis on the standing phase. Karate practitioners will spend more time practicing linear, hard movements e.g. punches, kicks, and demonstrations of strength. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pWxk9Uu9YI This link here shows the basics of JKA Shotokan karate
Anyone can do karate! We currently start classes at the age of 5. There is no age limit.

Training fees are $100 per student per term. This works out at $10 a week as we run for 10 weeks at a time. Annual membership is $60 for juniors and $90 for seniors. Uniform fees and equipment fees apply.

That is definitely ok! You do not need to have any marital arts experience to join us or do karate. Doing martial arts for the first time can be confusing and overwhelming however we have students of all levels and experiences and definitely cater classes and techniques for new students. We also have multiple instructors each class so new students can get any extra help they need settling in.

We run our class schedule in conjunction with QLD school term system. We run 4 x 10 week terms a year. We currently operate on 3 nights every week- Tuesday (Sandgate location), Wednesday (Bracken Ridge location) and Thursday nights (Northgate location). Students are welcome to train in track pants/shorts and t-shirt to start with. We do encourage students to purchase a uniform however (known as a ‘gi’) as soon as they have settled into their first few classes. These uniforms are available through the Instructor.

We encourage all new members to arrive at their first class 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. This gives the Instructor an opportunity to meet the new students and explain the basic format of the first class. Generally speaking, the first few classes will involve an introduction to the basic striking, blocking and kicking techniques and these will be practised at moderate speeds until the student’s coordination develops. Essentially, students can progress at their own speed based on their own personal level of fitness and flexibility.
